Chandigarh, January 28

Keeping in view the UGC guidelines and New Education Policy (NEP) 2020, Panjab University formed a committee for the formulation of guidelines for PhD students.

During a meeting held recently, several important agenda items, concerning the cancellation of PhD candidature, admission of industry-oriented persons and more, were resolved.

Will need 20 credits

  • BE/BTech students will be allowed to enrol for PhD coursework after meeting the requirement of 20 credits
  • In addition to 12 credits as per current regulations, the remaining 8 can be secured from subjects of allied branches of engineering

Taking forward the NEP recommendations, it was decided that BE/BTech students would be allowed to enrol for PhD coursework after meeting the requirement of 20 credits. In addition to 12 credits as per current regulations, the remaining eight can be secured from subjects of allied branches of engineering. If a student is pursuing bachelor’s in mechanical engineering, but wishes to continue PhD coursework in a different branch, as per NEP guidelines that will now be possible by choosing those subjects as part of securing the remaining eight credits.

It was recommended that chairpersons of the departments should issue a notice as reminder to research scholars three months before the last date of submission of their PhD thesis for the cancellation of candidature. If there is no intimation by the end of the stipulated period, the candidature will automatically be considered cancelled.

A committee member said, “On getting the PhD candidature cancelled, an amount of Rs 5,000 is to be paid. Therefore, scholars refrain from following the procedure. From now on, this amount will be collected right at the beginning as security, which will be later adjusted.”

After Dr Parveen Goyal of the UIET informed the committee members that less number of students enrolled for PhD in engineering, it was recommended that a separate question paper be prepared by the UIET for industry-oriented persons to enhance the number of enrolments to PhD. The majority of the students fail to qualify the entrance while others prefer getting placed right after graduation. With this step, more research work can be initiated in the technical field.

It was also decided that the attendance of PhD scholars be marked with the supervisor, the record of which will be sent to the parent department.
