New high for Chandigarh tricity’s software export

The industry saw 28% increase in export in 2022-23. file

Fuelled by growth in IT and ITeS sector, software exports from the tricity comprising Chandigarh, Panchkula and Mohali have crossed Rs 8,800 crore during the financial year 2022-23, an increase of 28% over the previous year.

The software exports from the region in the fiscal year 2021-22 was Rs 6,900 crore.

Out of the total exports in 2022-23, exports worth Rs 3,300 crore was registered by 140 units that are registered with the Software Technology Parks of India (STPI), while the exports from Special Economic Zone (SEZ) at Chandigarh (Infosys Ltd) was Rs 3,000 crore and from SEZ at Quarkcity, Mohali was Rs 2,500 crore.

STPI, under the administrative control of the Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY), was established to encourage and promote software export from India. It also offers infrastructure, skilling, mentoring, and market connect to startups. Many industries have operated and are operating from the Software Technology Parks of India facilities since 1992.

“Mohali is fast catching up especially when it comes to growth of IT/ITeS sector is concerned in Tier-II cities. Out of the total exports from the tricity, 50% of it are from Mohali,” said Ajay P Srivastava, Director & Center Head, STPI, Mohali.

He said the IT/ ITeS industry in tricity has created employment opportunity for more than 60,000 professionals, which is a milestone for any Tier II city. The region has attracted many new startups especially in product development space. Srivastava said the growth in this region had been fuelled largely by the growth of small and medium enterprises.

Harit Mohan, President TiE Chandigarh, said: “Given the exciting global outlook towards India especially with after Covid-19 recovery by critical sectors besides Industry, our nation today is poised for incremental growth which has to come through IT with Tier-II cities playing a critical role said.”

Overall, the value of software exports from the STPI units throughout India is over Rs 8 lakh crore during FY 2022-23.
