New UPSC chief Preeti Sudan is PU alumna

The Panjab University authorities have expressed pride in the fact that the newly appointed Chairperson of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), Preeti Sudan, has been a student of the university.
Sudan, a 1982-batch student, who pursued MPhil and MA in economics, also taught in the department as a lecturer on ad hoc basis. She was a resident of Rani Laxmi Bai Girls Hostel No. 2.
Expressing her happiness over Sudan’s appointment, Vice-Chancellor Dr Renu Vig said, “The PU is proud that alumni and students are achieving great heights every day. I extend congratulations to her on this prestigious appointment.”
An IAS officer of 1983-batch from the Andhra Pradesh cadre, Sudan retired as the Union Health Secretary in July 2020. During her last three years of service out of 37 year-long distinguished career, she served as the Union Health Secretary and handled the Covid pandemic.
Sudan will be taking charge as the chairperson of the UPSC on August 1. Incumbent Manoj Sahi has resigned, citing personal reasons. She will have a tenure till April 2025, when she turns 65. — TNS
