Nikhil, Kajal race to gold

Nikhil of DAV Senior Secondary School, Sector 8, won the gold medal in the boys’ U-16 2 km run during the Chandigarh State Cross Country Championship at the Sector 7 Sports Complex here today.
Nikhil was followed by schoolmate Vishal Kumar in second place, while Harbin Singh of St Joseph’s Senior Secondary School, Sector 44, bagged the third position.
In the girls’ U-16 competition, Kajal of Guru Gobind Singh College, Sector 26, claimed the gold medal, while Aman of Government Model Senior Secondary School (GMSSS), Sector 19, won the silver. Amandeep Kaur of Government Model High School (GMHS), Sector 43, had to be content with the bronze.
In the boys’ U-18 category, Devashish Patwal of Kendriya Vidyala School, Sector 47, topped the podium in the 6 km run. Akashdeep Singh of Shishu Niketan School, Sector 22, took home the silver, while Nitish Gupta of GMSSS, Sector 35, got the bronze medal.
Naina of Guru Gobind Singh College ran to 6 km gold in the girl’s U-20 competition. She was followed by Anjali of Athletic Club, Sector 30, and Sneha of Guru Gobind Singh College in second and third places, respectively.
In the boys’ U-20 category, Sahil Sagar of Sri Guru Gobind Singh College, Sector 26, won the gold medal in the 8 km run. Suraj Gupta of the Mauli Jagran Club bagged the silver, while Sahul of Post Graduate Government College, Sector 11, returned home with the bronze medal.
Deepak Kumar of Sri Guru Gobind Singh College topped the podium in the men’s 10km run. Sahil Gill of Sector 7 Sports Complex finished second, while Varinder Singh of Sri Guru Gobind Singh College secured the third position.
In women’s 10 km run, Chanda of Post Graduate Government College won the gold medal, while Usha of Sector 7 Sports Complex clinched the silver. Suman of GMHS, Sector 26, bagged the bronze medal.
Former district sports officer SK Joshi awarded the winners.
Around 200 athletes participated in the championship, which was organised by Chandigarh Athletics Association.
