More than two months have passed since the Special Investigation Team (SIT) was formed by the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Ropar range, to investigate the alleged custodial torture of Punjabi singer Elly Mangat by the police during his remand, but there has been no headway in the case so far.

Lawyers of Elly Mangat, GS Ghuman and GPS Ghuman, who had approached Sanjeev Kalra, Additional Director General of Police (ADGP), Punjab Police, demanding high-level inquiry, have alleged that the singer was tortured by Mohali DSP Ramandeep Singh, his two gunmen Sahil and Satinder and Inspector Rajiv Kumar, Station House Officer at the Mataur police station, when he was taken to the police custody on September 11 following his arrest.

A copy of the medical report was also submitted to the Inspector General of Police in this regard. The singer had alleged that the police had also made his video. Besides, Mangat also alleged that he was asked to give Rs 50 lakh and a swanky car in bribe.

“IGP assured us a time-bound investigation in the matter and a proper legal action against the police, if allegations are found to be true. The inquiry had to be finished within 10 days, but nothing has moved yet,” GS Ghuman and GPS Ghuman said.

Mangat allegedly said as the probe had to be done by the police against the police that was why they were not taking any action in the matter.

Amit Parsad, Inspector General of Police, Ropar Range, said, “The inquiry is complete. The reports will be submitted to the Director General of Punjab Police within a few days.”

The lawyers of Mangat, who had also moved the Punjab State Human Rights Commission earlier, are looking forward to move the court if no output is received from the ongoing investigation.

Mangat, who is out on bail, was arrested from Sector 88 by the Sohana police after he had gone there to fight with his rival singer Rami Randhawa, after setting a proper time. Both singers were involved in a verbal spat on the social media.
