HMPV, a respiratory virus similar to Covid in terms of symptoms, has been causing concern lately. However, Dr AK Mandal, director of Pulmonology, Sleep, and Critical Care at Fortis Hospital, Mohali, reassures that there’s no need for panic.

HMPV primarily causes mild illness, characterised by fever, sore throat, body aches, runny nose, and cough. In severe cases, it may lead to breathlessness and rarely, pneumonia requiring ICU admission. The virus is airborne and transmitted through droplets, close contact, and contaminated surfaces.

Dr Mandal explains, “While HMPV can be serious for vulnerable groups like children under five, the elderly, and immunosuppressed individuals, most cases are manageable and don’t escalate into severe illness. Symptoms often mimic Covid but are milder.”

He emphasises that basic hygiene measures can significantly reduce the spread of HMPV.
