The Bar Council of India Advocates Welfare Committee has introduced a scheme to provide relief to flood-hit Bar associations in Punjab and Haryana.

Suvir Sidhu, chairman of the committee and member-representative of the BCI from Punjab and Haryana, said the Bar Council of India and the Bar Council of Punjab and Haryana stood with the Bar Associations and members of the legal fraternity in Punjab and Haryana during this crucial time.”

The scheme aimed to assist Bar associations in repairing damages to chambers, libraries, furniture, electrical equipment or any other infrastructure essential for their functioning, which have been adversely affected by flooding, excessive rainfall, waterlogging, etc.

Under the scheme, a fixed one-time grant of up to Rs 2,00,000 will be provided to each affected district-level Bar association and up to Rs 1,00,000 to each subdivisional body. Similarly, they will be provided one-time grant of Rs 10,000 and Rs 5,000, respectively, to restore green cover lost in floods. The grant shall be unconditional and utilised solely for plantation and maintenance of trees.

PGI staff raise Rs 55,000 relief

Meanwhile, the non-faculty staff of the Advanced Paediatrics Centre at the PGI raised Rs 55,000 as relief for flood-affected people in Punjab. The collected amount was donated to the Punjab branch of Indian Red Cross Society to aid ongoing relief and rehabilitation work in the state.
