Chandigarh, August 11

Now, an OPD for dogs and cattle will soon start in Raipur Kalan. According to the Municipal Corporation, the cattle hospital is nearing completion and the OPD will be started once the process of hiring staff is complete. The manpower for the same will be engaged on outsource basis, so that immediate first-aid can be given to the injured cattle.

The hospital will be catering to about 1,000 plus cows, including injured, sick and abandoned ones. The city has been facing a big issue with regard to stray cattle as people from neighbouring areas abandon their cows at night after milking them.

An under-construction cattle hospital.

Construction of the building and purchase of machinery for the said hospital has already been done. The cattle pound, which also has a hospital, will run entirely on solar power. It will have an effluent treatment plant (ETP), a first at such a facility in the city. It will also have a laboratory, a kitchen, a parking area and a dormitory for workers.

The construction of the dog hospital is also in final stages of completion. The state-of-the-art pound will have a dog care unit, where injured canines will get treatment. It will house a laboratory, a hospital and an operation theatre. Along with sterilisation, vaccination of feral dogs will also be carried out. The centre, spread over 2.50 acres, will have a facility to sterilise 1,000 stray dogs.

The MC is already running an Animal Birth Control (ABC) Centre in Sector 38 for sterilisation, with a capacity of 110 kennels. With the coming up of a new dog pound, the capacity will increase to 420 kennels in the city. The MC claimed they have state-of-the-art facilities at the two hospitals and sick animals will be taken care of well.
