Out for swim, two teenagers from Chandigarh's Raipur Khurd drown in Ghaggar

In a heart-wrenching incident, two teenage boys, aged 15 and 14, drowned in Ghaggar river near here. The bodies were recovered this morning by a joint team of the Chandigarh and Panchkula police after an overnight search operation.

Victims Armaan and Shad Mohammad

The deceased have been identified as Armaan, aged 15, son of Nawazuddin, and Shad Mohammad, aged 14, son of Anish Mohammad. Both were residents of Raipur Khurd, Chandigarh. The police confirmed that the fathers of the two boys were siblings.

According to the police, a group of four teenagers had gone to the Ghaggar on Monday afternoon to take a dip but two of them failed to return, following which a case was registered at the Mauli Jagran police station on the complaint of their family members who reported them as missing.

While the police had begun search efforts, around 11.30 pm one of the teenagers, who had returned home, disclosed to his parents that the group had gone for swimming in the river, and two of their companions went missing in the waters. The teenagers who returned were initially hesitant and afraid of telling the truth.

Upon receiving this critical information, multiple police teams, including personnel from the Chandimandir police station, the Sector 5 police, and the Panchkula crime unit, joined forces with the Chandigarh Police to launch a coordinated search and rescue operation. The bodies of the two teenagers were recovered from the river early this morning and subsequently sent for autopsy.

Man killed in road mishap

A 65-year-old man died while two others were injured as two vehicles collided near the Ghaggar River bridge at Chauki Chauraha. The deceased, Charan Singh, a resident of Nichli Chauki village in Sector 32, was returning from Nada Sahib Gurdwara with his neighbour on a scooter when a speeding bike hit them. They were taken to the Civil Hospital in Sector 6, where doctors pronounced Charan Singh dead, while the pillion rider, Udham Singh, was referred to the PGI. The biker, identified as Abhishek (23) from Khagesra village, was also injured. A case has been registered at the Chandimandir police station.
