After the Municipal Corporation here put out a tender for the paid parking at Sector 20 market, resident welfare association of the area said they were examining the matter to decide future course of action.
The RWA has been opposing the move, calling it “an illegal decision to extort money from the residents”.
KK Jindal, president, Sector 20 RWA, said: “We go to the market regularly for our daily needs and will have to pay for parking every time.”
Jindal had recently told Chandigarh Tribune they would hold a protest over the issue, if needed.
“There is no justification in introducing paid parking at Sector 20 since the Haryana Shahri Vikas Pradhikaran (HSVP), during the development of the sector, had levied charges for the parking space left in front of the sector market,” he said.
The civic body has also decided to introduce parking charges at the Sector 14 market.
Earlier in 2020, the MC had introduced paid parking in Sectors 8, 9 and 10.
Mayor Kulbhushan Goyal though justified the move, saying it will boost the revenue and funds generated through parking tax will be used for the development works.
Haryana Pradesh Mahila Congress president Sudha Bhardwaj said the MC should withdraw its decision on paid parking in Sector 20.
