Panchkula, February 14
The Panchkula MC has decided to issue a new tender for door-to-door collection and segregation of garbage from the city, which would cost Rs 18.30 crore. Residents said that despite spending a hefty sum on this process, the MC has failed to ensure 100 per cent segregation of waste at source.
The MC had recently discussed the matter during a meeting presided over by Mayor Kulbhushan Goyal. Officials said the current project would end by May, and the new project would also be valid for one year.
The MC’s project includes door-to-door collection of garbage, its segregation, transportation, and processing. At present, the city produces over 200 tonnes of garbage from across the city.
No segregation, despite charges to residents
Recently, the Panchkula MC began charging residents for collecting and segregating waste at the source. The monthly fees for residential areas were Rs 50 for units up to 50 sq m, Rs 100 for sites above 50 sq m and up to 200 sq m, Rs 200 for units between 200 and 500 sq m, Rs 250 for units between 500 and 1000 sq m, and Rs 350 for units above 1000 sq m.
Residents said despite these charges, the MC has failed to ensure segregation of waste at source. They said the garbage was collectively dumped in the vehicles and was later segregated only by municipal employees.
An MC official said the MC segregates garbage at the source and transports it to Patvi for processing instead of the Jhuriwala dumping ground. “We have been making announcements asking residents to segregate garbage before dumping it. We have held meetings with various resident welfare organisations regarding this.”
The chief sanitary inspector, Avinash Singla, said the MC had already deputed enough vehicles to collect waste from across the city. “The residents should provide the garbage waste to MC vehicles only,” he said.
