Panjab University assistant professor held in cheating case

Police arrested Panjab University Sociology department assistant professor Moniva Sarkar in Rs 18 lakh cheating case related to the sale of flat in ‘The Lake’ project of Omaxe township in New Chandigarh on Monday.

The former head of the department, 38-year-old, was arrested from the university campus today on court orders after a cheating case was registered against her on March 15, 2024.

Complainant Neeraj Kumar, a resident of Mohali, stated in his complaint that he reportedly struck a deal with her for Rs 1.30 crore through his friend Ankush Singla. On September 21, 2023, he reportedly paid her Rs 18 lakh. It was decided to get the flat registered in his name on December 5, 2023.

Later, Kumar came to know that Sarkar, currently a resident of Sector 14, struck a deal to sell the flat to another person and she reportedly has a loan against her of Rs 92 lakh. After a cheating case was registered against Sarkar, she reportedly went missing, and the case was sent for mediation in the High Court.

Panjab University officials confirmed that another dispute was going on with Sarkar for past sometime.

Kharar-2 DSP Dharamvir Singh said, “The arrest was made on the orders of the court. The suspect was placed under suspension for past sometime. A case under Section 420 and 406 of the Indian Penal Code has been registered at the Mullanpur police station on March 15.”
