Fearing last-minute pressure of paying the fee, parents of those studying in Panjab University (PU) want some clarity regarding starting the new semester.

Usually, the PU starts the process for new and existing admissions to various courses in June-July. However, due to the lockdown, there are no clarifications about examination, admissions and starting of the new semester.

“The authorities should come up with a decision as things are not going well financially with a majority of the parents. We should be informed well in time so that if someone wants to arrange the fee, he/she can avoid last-minute hassles. The university should not totally depend on the MHA guidelines,” said Romen Singh, a parent.

The city is already witnessing a series of protests by the parents opposing charging of fee by schools. “We cannot come and protest, but the authorities should give us sufficient time for the submission of the fee. A majority of the students in the PU belong to middle-class families. The more they delay the new semester, the less time parents will get to submit the fee,” said Manmohan Choudhary, another parent.

Meanwhile, sources said even the authorities were unaware about the problem and they were waiting to hear from the MHA.

“The coming months are crucial for the PU management, parents and students. Once the authorities get green light for opening the university, they will try to complete all thing as soon as possible to cover up for the time lost during the lockdown,” said sources.
