To deal with traffic violators who have been issued traffic violation information slip (TVIS) challans and do not bother to pay the fine, the UT traffic police are mulling over seizing their vehicles if the defaulting driver is caught driving on city roads.
69,500 TVIS challans were issued in 2019
- Around 69,500 TVIS challans were issued by the traffic police in 2019. The most common violations captured by people on the camera included stopping vehicles on the zebra crossing, wrong parking, helmetless riding and driving on the wrong side.
Usually, a TVIS challan, which is issued on the basis of violations caught on CCTV cameras installed at various light points in the city or pictures of violations sent to the police through social media, including Facebook, WhatsApp and Twitter, by people, is not paid by violators. A TVIS challan is sent on the registered address of the vehicle owner.
The police also send reminder SMSes on the registered mobile number of the vehicle owners who have not paid the fine.
Earlier, the police had decided that the owners of challaned vehicles will first have to clear all pending challans to get a no-objection certificate (NOC) at the time of selling their vehicles. The police issue an NOC to the vehicle owner for the transfer of the ownership of the vehicle.
A police official said they were considering a proposal that if a defaulting driver was caught driving, the vehicle might be seized on the spot until all pending challans were cleared. Sources said modalities regarding the proposal were being worked out before implementing it.
“We are examining legal provisions,” said the official.
