The posts will be distributed among 26 departments of the institute as per their requirements.

Out of the total posts, the Department of Anaesthesia will get the maximum — 10 assistant professors — in order to reduce the waiting period of operations, while the Ophthalmology Department and the Renal Transplant Surgery will get four doctors each.

The departments of Gastroenterology, Nuclear Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynaecology will get nearly three doctors each.

The new appointments would ease the burden as nearly 28 lakh patients visit various OPDs of the institute every year. A large number of patients come to the PGI from Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir and even Rajasthan due to inadequate medical facilities in these states.

The Departments of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery, Community Medicine, Endocrinology, Emergency, Medical Oncology, Nephrology, Neurology, Plastic Surgery, Radiodiagnosis and Urology will get two doctors each.

Of the total posts, 35 posts are to be filled by general category candidates, three by economic weaker section (EWS), 10 from the SC community, three from the ST community and 26 posts are to be filled by candidates from the OBC category.

However, a total of three posts out of the total 11 posts of assistant professors in the Departments of Psychiatry, Radiology, Pulmonary Medicine, ENT, Urology, Clinical Psychology and Dentistry are reserved for persons with disabilities.
