Panchkula shuttler Anupama Upadhyaya won a silver medal in the women’s singles event during the ongoing 38th National Games in Uttarakhand. In the first round, the Panchkula player defeated national championship silver medallist Shriyanshi Valishetty of Telangana, followed by a convincing win over Assam’s Isharani Baruah in the quarterfinals.
Isharani is the 2023 National Championship bronze medallist. In the semifinal, she was up against Shreya Lele of Gujarat, who had defeated this year’s national champion Devika Sihag in the first round. Anupama overpowered the hurdle with style to set up her title clash with another Haryana player Anmol Kharab.
The final was never easy for Anupama as the 18-year-old Anmol proved out to be a tough nut to crack. Anmol defeated top seed Anupama Upadhyaya in straight games to win the gold medal. Anmol accounted for her senior compatriot and world No 43 Anupama 21-16, 22-20 at the multipurpose hall in Dehradun’s Parade Ground.

In the men’s final, Haryana faced tough resistance from the hosts before logging a 74-71 victory for the gold medal. Himachal Pradesh and Delhi won a bronze each.
