The Chandigarh School of Drama today staged a Punjabi play’ Jhanaa de paani’ on the third day of “Asharfiyaan” drama festival organised by Impact Arts, Mohali, in collaboration with Sangeet Natak Academy New Delhi, Punjab Arts Council, and The Mentor Group underway at Randhawa Auditorium here today.

Written by Dr Ajmer Aulakh and directed by Ikattar Singh, the play focussed on the plight of destitute women. Gangi, who was brought from Bihar by a poor farmer Bhanti. Their relationship came under criticism from the farming community, especially the village landlord who sought possession of Gangi in lieu of the pending debt on Bhanti.

She was later sold four times to unmatching grooms. Subjected to all sorts of mental tortures finally she gathers courage to settle score with all those who exploited her and treated her like a commodity. Cast of the play Ikatar Singh, Prabhjot Kaur Randhawa, Harwinder Singh Aujla, Randeep Bhanghu, Karanveer Gulzaar, Babandeep Kaur, Kimmi Deol, Barinder Singh, Shadie Chahal and Lucky Sardar formed the total cast. — OC
