Panic spread on Dera Bassi-Mubarikpur road this evening when an underground PNG pipeline caught fire near a filling station around 6.45 pm. Two fire tenders were rushed to the spot to control the blaze.

The underground PNG pipeline, installed a year ago, supplies gas to Patiala, Dera Bassi, Chandigarh and Mohali areas.

Officials said the fire broke out after an earthmover damaged the pipeline during excavation work. The gas valve was closed in time to prevent any untoward incident and the supply was restored in three hours.
