Police crack down on blood donation camps at Jor Mela
The District Civil and Police administration today cracked down on the blood donation camps running at Jor Mela, in spite of the strict directions of district administration to close them. Allegedly set up without proper permission from the health department, the camps were in violations of several norms.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Dr Ravjot Grewal said as per the Deputy Commissioner’s (DC) directions, no camp should be set up without police clearance. She said an SIT led by Rakesh Yadav today raided all the camps and no proper permission was shown, leading to their removal.
Meanwhile, Civil Surgeon Dr Devinderjit Kaur has proceeded on leave for two weeks without informing the district administration despite the DC’s orders banning all such leaves during the Jor Mela.
The DC has written to Secretary Health to take appropriate action against Civil Surgeon for flouting her orders. The Civil Surgeon, meanwhile, said she had already applied for leave, which was granted by the Director Health.
After visiting the camps, however, the DC said the Civil Surgeon has not informed her about proceeding on leave. She added that it would be very difficult to look after the healthcare of 20 lakh devotees during Shaheedi Jor Mela in such a situation. She said she would seek an explanation from the Civil Surgeon.
Sources privy to the developments said as the enquiry was marked into the unauthorised blood donation camps in Jor Mela, the Civil Surgeon visited the camps for a day and left in a huff.
