All India Power Engineers Federation (AIPEF) today congratulated power engineers for successful handling of power grid operations during the nine minute lights-off event.

VK Gupta, a spokesperson of the AIPEF, said there was an unprecedented variation of 31,089 MW at the national level, which was about 27 per cent of the total load.

Power engineers worked overtime to see that frequency and voltage was kept within limits and the power did not go out of control, Gupta added.

The national-level generation before 9 pm was 11,6887 MW, which came down to 85,799 MW. In the northern region, the load crash was 9,730 MW. The load fall in Punjab was 464 MW from 2,995 MW to 2,531 MW during 15-minute period.

Subsequently, the ramp-up was done smoothly as demand and supply became normal afterwards. Hydro generation across the country was minimised by 20:45 hours and was again ramped up after the nine-minute event to meet the increase in demand.

“Power engineers have thereby managed the power system of country by operating within safe and secure limits with no outage or contingency,” said Gupta.
