An electricity panchayat was organised against privatisation on Wednesday at Ramlila Ground, Sector 28, under the chairmanship of UT Powermen Union president Amrik Singh.
A large number of employees, farmers and labourers participated in the event against handing over the Electricity Department to private hands on the instructions of the Centre.
On behalf of the committee, National vice-president of te Electricity Employees’ Federation of India Subhash Lamba announced that the fight against privatisation will be fought in the entire country along with Chandigarh. He announced that on December 31, electricity employees of all states will freeze work from 12 to 1 pm against privatisation and will march to Raj Bhavan in all state capitals.
Chandigarh Mayor Kuldeep Kumar also participated in the event with more than five councillors. Congress president Harmohinder Singh Lucky and district head Surjit Singh Dhillon, who have been on hunger strike against privatisation for many days, also reached the venue and announced to give all possible help in the fight against privatisation.
All India Kisan Sabha general secretary Biju Krishnan also arrived at the panchayat and strongly opposed privatisation. Leaders of the National Coordination Committee of Electricity Employees and Engineers (NCCOEE) Shailendra Dubey, Subhash Lamba, RK Sharma, Devendra Kumar, Gurpreet Singh Gandi, Suresh Rathi, Heera Lal Verma, and Abdul Nazar participated in the event.
