President Murmu empowers Chandigarh Administrator under Prisons Act
President Droupadi Murmu on Wednesday empowered the Chandigarh Administrator to exercise state government powers under the Prisons Act.
The Ministry of Home Affairs issued a notification authorising the Administrator of the Union Territory of Chandigarh to exercise the powers and perform the functions of the State Government under the Prisons Act, 1894.
The directive, issued in pursuance of clause (1) of Article 239 of the Constitution, states that the Administrator will function under the control of the President and continue in this role until further orders.
According to the notification issued by Ministry of Home Affairs, the decision ensures that the administration of prisons within the Union Territory will be managed in accordance with the provisions of the Act, facilitating effective governance and law enforcement.
