The installation of six speed radars in the tricity is a welcome step. The MC has finally given a shape to the pilot project. This will help the traffic police take care of other things. However, the radars should have been placed at a higher level from the ground so that they were out of the reach of people. Vehicle density in India is very high and there are chances that the radar clicks picture of a wrong car.

More needs to be done
It’s a big relief for the city residents that the Administration has imposed restrictions on the entry of heavy vehicles from all entry points during peak rush hours, effective from February 1. However, a lot more needs to be done. Public transport system should be strengthened. Framing a plan for underground metro rail network is also needed. Use of cycles needs to be encouraged by providing more tracks and a subsidy on purchase of cycles. Restricting the number of cars owned by any individual or household will also help in curtailing the density of vehicles in the city. All those applying for approval of building plans for construction of new house or commercial buildings should be asked to ensure provision of underground parking so that congestion of vehicles can be controlled. Widening of roads should be undertaken.
