Panjab University (PU) may not form a sub-committee for renewing or granting affiliation to various colleges in and around the city this year.

Sources said the 19-member Syndicate will now shoulder the responsibility of awarding affiliation instead of forming a sub-committee. “Even though the PU Syndicate has the power to constitute a sub-committee to shoulder several tasks, looking at the accusations of bias by several Senate members, it is most likely that the decisions will now be taken in consensus with the Vice-Chancellor,” said a source.

Last year, the PU affiliation committee came under the scanner after it denied affiliation to Post Graduate Government College (PGGC), Sector 46, and the Government College of Commerce and Business Administration (GCCBA), Sector 50, for the 2019-20 academic session. The Syndicate, while taking a call on granting temporary extension of affiliation to the Institute of Management of DAV College, Sector 10, for its MBA course, had courted a controversy too, until the matter was brought to the court.

A Syndic shared: “The decision of not forming a sub-committee for affiliation was taken in 2018 also, but because of the paucity of time and the gravity of work, a sub-committee had to be formed in May 2019. The first time the PU formed an affiliation sub-committee was in 2016. It’s a Herculean task to look at the previous records of colleges. We also have to take into account the observations of the inspection committee. The scrutiny takes a lot of time.”
