The Association of Students for Alternative Politics (ASAP), the student wing of Aam Aadmi Party, today named Mankirat Singh Mann, a PhD scholar in mechanical engineering department of the University Institute of Engineering and Technology (UIET), as its presidential candidate for the upcoming Panjab University Campus Students’ Council (PUCSC) elections.

Mann brings with him strong academic credentials, a vision for transparent and accountable student leadership and a commitment to address the real issues faced by the student community.

For the post of General Secretary, the ASAP has picked Komalpreet Kaur from the Department of University Institute of Law Studies (UILS).

“Known for her active involvement in student welfare activities, Komalpreet represents the voice of inclusivity, gender equity and student empowerment on the campus. ASAP’s candidates stand for clean politics, academic excellence and development of the university,” said Deepak Bansal, incharge, ASAP, Punjab & Chandigarh.

Amid the rift within the group, the Panjab University Students Union (PUSU) has officially announced Sidharth Boora of the UIET as one of its candidates. Boora is widely recognised for his dedication to student welfare and activism. He sat on an indefinite hunger strike for six consecutive days, the longest on the campus in recent years. The announcement was made in the presence of senior PUSU leaders, including party president Babal Chaudhary.

AISA’s class campaign

Contesting the election after a long break, the All India Students’ Association (AISA), a left wing student organisation, carried an exclusive campaign in classes. The idea was to meet students of the UILS and the Department of Emerging Studies. “Students from self-financed departments vented their anger against the exorbitant fees they are forced to pay. It was even higher than many private universities. Despite having cleared competitive exams to secure admission in a premier public university, students here are left without functional placement cells and proper infrastructure,” stated Ajay Karan Singh, who is contesting the post of joint secretary.

PSU Lalkaar’s manifesto

Jobanpreet, the presidential candidate of PSU Lalkaar, today released the group’s manifesto. The party promised no more fee hike, hostels for needy students, recruitment of faculty, eco-friendly campus, library facilities and opposing privatisation and centralisation agendas of the NEP-2020.

Navneet to contest top post

The Ambedkar Students Forum, Panjab University, announced Navneet Kaur as its presidential candidate.
