Reaching a compromise with protesting students, the Panjab University authorities have announced that the university security department will lead in securing the campus parameter, with the support of the Chandigarh Police, in the run-up to the Panjab University Campus Students’ Council (PUCSC) elections.

Various student political groups were protesting against heavy police presence on the campus and raids at hostels ahead of the PUCSC polls. After the assurance, the students lifted their protest, which was being held near the Administration Block.

One-way traffic system under review

The Panjab University authorities will also review one-way traffic system on the campus. The university traffic committee will assess the situation and take a final decision after a review by the Chandigarh SSP.

It has now been decided that the university security will lead the charge with the police support and will also plan or set up nakas on the campus. PU DSW Amit Chauhan has confirmed the development.

Sources claimed that it has also been decided that the police personnel will not enter the hostels and wardens, along with university security, will conduct raids.

“In the event of presence of outsiders or any inappropriate thing inside hostels, the Chandigarh Police will take action till the declaration of election dates. The police will not issue challans on both campuses. The security check at nakas will be led by university campus security with police support,” said a source.
