PU swimmer Siddhant claims two medals

Chandigarh, February 23

Panjab University swimmer Siddhant Sejwal shined on the second day of the Khelo India University Games in Bhubaneswar today. He claimed the first gold for the university in the 100m backstroke event by clocking 58.69 seconds and also won a silver medal in the 200m individual medley with a timing of 2:16.04.

Jain University (Bengaluru) swimmers won four gold medals. SV Nikitha was the toast of the Jain University as she won the women’s 400m freestyle gold and then anchored the 4x200m freestyle relay team to a handsome victory over Delhi University and University of Mumbai. Siva Sridhar (400m freestyle) and SP Likith (200m breaststroke) were the other gold winners for Jain University.

PU loses fencing gold

Guru Nanak Dev University (Amritsar) fencing squad claimed three gold medals to remain on the second spot. Riya Bakshi of Cluster University, Jammu, won the first gold medal on offer. Left-handed Riya Bakshi stayed focused through her foil final against the gritty Kajal of Panjab University. Riya pulled off a 15-11 win to take the gold medal. Kusum of Panjab University brought some good news by winning the bronze medal along with Simranjeet Kaur of Punjabi University (Patiala).

In the team’s foil final, Dr BR Ambedkar University (Aurangabad), represented by Tushar Raosaheb Aheer, Durgesh M Jahangirdar and A Sayyed Shaker, registered a 45-25 win over Panjab University’s Deepak S Bisht, Divesh and Amit Kumar. Guru Nanak Dev University and Shivaji University (Kolhapur) won bronze.

In the epee event, Jyotika Dutta of Guru Nanak Dev University defeated Linthoi Haobam of Manipur University 15-14 to claim the top position. Chhavi Kohli and Yashkeerat Hayer, both of Panjab University, claimed a bronze medal each.

In the team event final, Panjab University (Mumtaj, Yashkeerat K Hayer and Chhavi Kohli) beat Punjabi University (M S Greashma, Ena Arora and Jaseerat Singh) 45-37 to claim the gold. Kannur University and Guru Nanak Dev University claimed the third position. Tushar Raosaheb Aheer (Dr. BR Ambedkar Marathwada University, Aurangabad) rallied to beat Tariq Hussain (Guru Nanak Dev University) 15-14 after a duel in which it was apparent that his rival was hampered by a ligament tear suffered earlier. Tushar Aheer also had a hand in the team’s gold later in the day. The women’s epee bout saw Jyotika Dutta (Guru Nanak Dev University) script a similar turnaround against Manipur University’s Linthoi Haobam.

Punjabi Uni win in hockey

Punjabi University defeated ITM University (Madhya Pradesh) in the women’s hockey match. The side registered a 3-1 win over ITM University. Meanwhile, the top-ranked Punjabi University archer Sangampreet Singh Bisla breezed into the men’s final by overcoming the first serious challenge by his teammate Sukhminder Singh with a 147-145 win. He will meet second-ranked Mukul Sharma (University of Rajasthan) in the final. He is in line to win a triple gold, being part of the men’s team and mixed teams too.

PU cagers face defeat

Panjab University women’s basketball team faced a 37-67 defeat to Kurukshetra University. In other matches, Hindustan University (Chennai) defeated University of Madras 73-55, Guru Nanak Dev University ousted Laxmibai National Institute 102-82.—TNS
