The PU Syndicate today deferred the fee hike proposal for an indefinite period.

The decision, which was taken during a meeting held at Golden Jubilee Hall today, has come as a relief for students of 196 colleges affiliated with the PU. A hike of five to seven per cent was proposed in the agenda.

The Syndicate also approved the name of Prof Sukhbir Kaur of the Department of Zoology for the post of the DSW (Women). The agenda to appoint Dr Davinder Singh (law faculty) as the DSW (Men) and Prof Ashok Kumar of the Department of Hindi as the Associate DSW was rejected.

The Syndicate also approved continuation of Prof Ranjan Kumar of the Department of Physics as the Associate DSW. The Syndicate will take a call on appointment of the new DSW (Men) in its next meeting, which will be held on June 27. Till then, Vice-Chancellor Prof Raj Kumar has been given the power to appoint a competent person to the post.

Sources said the decision was taken after two hours of arguments and a walkout by some syndics.

If the Syndicate does not meet on June 27, the charge will be given to the DUI. Dr Davinder Singh is reportedly a close aide of the VC.

The syndics have also approved the formation of committees to assess the recommendation of new courses and the academic calendar. It rejected a proposal to appoint Dr SS Sangha as the Principal of Dashmesh Girls College of Education, Muktsar.
