Chandigarh, January 22

The governments of Punjab and Haryana have agreed to complete the ring road project to decongest the city.

Tribune Flyover issue discussed

The issue of the Tribune flyover was also discussed during the meeting. Punjab and Haryana officials said it was within the domain of the UT to take a suitable decision to solve the traffic problem in the city. While Punjab officials said the Administration could take a decision that suited them the best, Haryana officials expressed views on other alternatives like improvement in the traffic lights system.

Their assurance came during a meeting of the tricity coordination committee after Punjab Governor and UT Administrator VP Singh Badnore asked the states to complete the missing links of the inner ring road and start acquiring land for the outer ring of the project. The length of the outer ring road is 100 km.

UT Adviser Manoj Parida, Haryana Chief Secretary Keshni Anand, Punjab Chief Secretary Karan Avtar and other senior officials of Punjab and Haryana attended the meeting.

UT officials said the Punjab Government had proposed PR 7 road in the Master Plan of Mohali and Zirakpur to link Panchkula with the international airport. The said road starts from the road from Kharar to Chandigarh near VR Punjab and provides connectivity to Panchkula. However, there were certain missing linkages, of approximately 7 km, which have to be created to ease traffic congestion.

A bridge needs to be constructed on Ghaggar river from the PR 7 road connecting the road separating Sector 25 and 26 in Panchkula. It will provide a great relief to people coming to the airport from the Haryana side and also act as the shortest route to the airport through NH 73.

Further, a small link from the PR 7 road connecting the existing Dera Bassi-Ramgarh road needs to be provided to give connectivity to Haryana as this road further links with NH 73.

The Administration said there was a proposal in the regional plan of GMADA to construct an expressway and the ring road will serve as a bypass for Chandigarh PR 7.

Law and order

A discussion was also held on tackling crimes committed by interstate gangsters besides snatchings and thefts in the tricity. The DGP, Chandigarh, suggested extending the emergency response support system (Control Room number 112) and e-beat book to Panchkula and Mohali. It was decided that the three police chiefs will meet once in three months and three SPs of the tricity will meet once a month for better coordination and the field officers will meet even more frequently for better coordination and cooperation. It was also proposed that the security audit of public places for safety of women shall be done on various parameters like lighting, openness, visibility, security, public transport and setting up of helpline for women and child safety.

The UT also explained its stand on Sukhna eco-sensitive zone.

It was also decided that the committee under the UT Adviser will look into and resolve the health and transport issues of the tricity. The UT also proposed uniform speed limit for vehicles in the tricity.
