The 30th Punjab Open Ladies Amateur Championship started today with a total of 97 players teeing off at Chandigarh Golf Club.

Gurbrinder Johl (88), the oldest player of the meet, and 82-year-old Dr Pramila Chari, along with the youngest player, nine-year-old Gairat Kaur Kahlon started the opening day as hot favourites.

After Round 1, Diya Brar led the event with a gross score of 73, which is 1­- over par, closely followed by Hazel Chauhan with a score of 74. Henaaz Khera ended the day at third position with a score of 77. Recognised as one of the foremost golf tournaments for women in the region, the championship provides a launchpad to notable golfers. Aditi Ashok, whose stellar performance at the Tokyo Olympics made her a household name, has been a participant in this tournament during her junior years.

As many as 100 participants, including 16 juniors and sub-juniors, are competing over 54 holes in the three-day tournament. — TNS
