Residents seek FIR after SUV crashes into cars

The complainant said the police declined to register an FIR in a case, stating that the incident does not qualify as a cognisable offence

Two cars parked outside a house were damaged after a speeding SUV crashed into them. There were no injuries in the incident.

According to the complainant, Ada Soni, a resident of Sector 21, her vehicle bearing a Chandigarh registration parked outside her house was hit by the SUV. She said the car’s driver, Mohit Yadav, was driving at a high and his recklessness caused significant damage to her car and another parked vehicle.

The complainant said the police declined to register an FIR in a case, stating that the incident does not qualify as a cognisable offence.

Her father, KG Soni, said, “Not only did the 29-year-old driver hit two cars, but also damaged the wall of our house in the mishap.” He added that after multiple requests to the police to register an FIR, the authorities cited that the matter pertains only to property damage and not to any cognisable offence involving personal injury or criminal intent.

The police have recorded statements and advised the complainant to pursue the matter through civil remedies.

Police post 21 in-charge and SHO of the area concerned reiterated that the incident was s a non-cognisable offence as no one was hurt. “I have marked it to the ACP to assure the complainant that it will be followed through. In these cases where property or vehicle damage happens, a DDR can be registered to settle the matter in court and claim damages,” DCP Srishti Gupta said.
