Rich medal haul for Chandigarh boxers at National Games
Punching their way to glory, local pugilists have bagged a rich haul of medals at the ongoing 38th National Games in Pithoragarh, Uttrakhand.
Anshul Punia claimed silver medal in the 51kg category, while Pranshu Rathore claimed silver in the 75kg event. In the 80kg category, Nitish Kumar bagged bronze medal, while Mannu Nimavat also claimed bronze in the 66kg event. Ritika ended her campaign by winning a bronze medal in the 50kg event. While the Chandigarh women team claimed seventh position overall, the male boxers claimed overall fifth position. All the medal winners train at the Sector 42 Sports Complex.
Services’ Mandengbam Singh defeated Chandigarh’s Anshul Punia in the men’s flyweight (51kg) division by a 4-1 split decision, while in the finals of women’s 75kg category the Chandigarh boxer lost to Olympic bronze medallist Lovlina Borgohain from Assam by 0-5. All 13 boxing categories across the men’s and women’s sections concluded on Friday. An 11-member contingent from Chandigarh participated in the event, which included six men and five women boxers. Two male and three female boxers won the medals.
“I am proud of my trainees. Our boxers have been performing consistently well in all national and international boxing circuit. I congratulate all boxers on the behalf of the UT Sports Department,” said Bhagwant Singh, coach at Sector 42 Sports Complex. The support staff of the local contingent included head coachPankaj Chauhan, manager N Dureja and coaches Sunil, Rajat, Nimma and Himanshu.
