Commuters faced long delays this evening as heavy traffic congestion brought movement to a crawl on the Zirakpur–Panchkula highway.

The jam occurred after vehicles were diverted into a single lane due to ongoing recarpeting work on the railway overbridge near Baltana in Zirakpur.

With one side of the bridge closed for maintenance, vehicles from both directions were forced to share a narrow lane, leading to a massive bottleneck during peak hours.

The gridlock extended for several kilometres, affecting traffic flow towards Panchkula, Zirakpur and adjoining areas.

Motorists complained of being stuck for over an hour as traffic police struggled to manage the situation.

Meanwhile, authorities have urged commuters to take alternative routes until the resurfacing work is completed.

The recarpeting is expected to improve road conditions but has caused temporary inconvenience to daily travellers.
