Deputy Mayor Kuljit Singh Bedi strongly opposed the decision of the Punjab Government to increase property tax rates by 5% in all municipal corporations, municipal councils and nagar panchayats, effective from April 1 this year.

The hike has been implemented for the financial year 2025–26 through a notification by the Department of Local Government on June 5, Bedi said. The department had mentioned in its notification on February 14, 2021, that these tax rates would be increased by 5% every year, starting from 2021–22.

Bedi stated that silently implementing a 5% hike in property tax reflected the government’s policy of concealment. He demanded that this tax hike be immediately rolled back and that no such decisions be taken without consulting people.
