Chandigarh: RPG attack accused freed in double murder case

Chandigarh, July 24

A local court has acquitted Deepak Ranga in a five-year-old double murder case of Sector 15 here after the prosecution failed to prove the charges. Two students Vineet Kumar and Ajay of Jind were killed when assailants opened fire at them on December 19, 2019 around 10 pm in their rented accommodation.

The students were associated with the Hindustan Student Association. The police claimed that student politics and personal rivalry were the reason for the murder.

Ranga is also the main accused in the RPG attack on the Punjab Police Intelligence Headquarters building in Mohali. Ranga, a resident of Haryana’s Jhajjar, was arrested by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) from UP’s Gorakhpur on January 26, 2023. Later, the Chandigarh Police brought him to interrogate in the 2019 murder case. After investigation the police claimed that Ranga was involved in the abovesaid murder.

As per the prosecution, the accused had allegedly intended to kill Ashu Nain, a final-year BA student at DAV College, as well, but he had left the place a couple of hours before the attack took place. The police arrested Ankit Narwal, Sunil, Vicky and Amit in the murder case. But they were acquitted last year after the prosecution failed to prove charges.

Later, Ranga was arrested in the case and the police filed a supplementary chargesheet against him in the court. It claimed that Ranga was also involved in the shootout as he worked on the directions of gangsters Lawrence Bishnoi and Raju Basodi. Police further claimed that Basodi wanted to eliminate Ashu as his friend Ankit had an enmity with the former. The challan against Ranga was presented under various sections of the IPC and Arms Act.

Gurbir Singh Sandhu, counsel of the accused, said the prosecution had failed to establish the link of the accused with the crime. After hearing the arguments the court acquitted the accused of the charges framed against him.
