Chandigarh, April 13
To lessen the impact in case of road accidents, the MC has decided to reduce the height of six roundabouts in the city from nearly 2 ft to nine inches.
The MC will also put up paver blocks of 6-foot width on the peripheral area of the roundabouts. Work on one of these, the Sector 14/15/24/25 roundabout, was underway today. The work will be carried out on six chowks under a pilot project. According to MC officials, the work was being done on the recommendations of the Road Safety Council. “If the model becomes successful, it will be replicated in other chowks in the city,” said an official.
“We are not going to change the geometry of the roundabouts. We will put up pavers around these. It will go a big way in ensuring the safety of commuters,” he added.
Such roundabouts are already there in Panchukla and one also exists in Chandigarh, at the Sector 4/5 chowk.
