A team of the UT Forest and Wildlife Department rescued a sambar after the animal strayed into a residential area of the city this morning. The animal’s presence created panic among locals because of its huge antlers.

TC Nautiyal, Chief Wildlife Warden, UT, said they received a call around 9.15 am that a sambar had entered into the residential area of Sector 9. Soon, a team of the Wildlife Department was rushed to the spot, but the animal, aged 4-5 years, escaped from Sector 9 and reached Sector 18 where it was brought under control around 10.15 am.

The officials then took the animal to a veterinarian for a medical checkup after which it was released into the Sukhna Wildlife Sanctuary in the evening, said Nautiyal. The officer said the sambar must have lost its way from the Sukhna Lake Sanctuary and strayed into residential area.

Visuals showed forest officials carefully wrapping the deer in a net to take it away from the area. “It is very rare that a sambar enters the city. The weather has been bad for the last two to three days because of the rain, therefore it must have lost its way and entered the residential area,” an official said.
