Vehicles plying at the Plaza in Sector 17 here pose a risk to the lives of pedestrians. While the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation and the traffic police have become a mute spectator, one can see four-wheelers plying at the Plaza daily.
Harman Singh Sidhu, president of ArriveSAFE, NGO, and a member of the Road Safety Council of the Administration, in a letter to UT Adviser Manoj Kumar Parida has requested him to issue directions to officials concerned that vehicles should not be allowed at the Plaza.
He said one could see vehicles being driven at the Plaza, which should be the exclusive domain of pedestrians. Vehicles could also be seen parked here. Traders use vehicles to bring goods to their shops here.
Harman Singh Sidhu said a Toyota Innova dropped some bags at a shop today and sped away putting lives of pedestrians at risk. When he requested the ‘munshi’ of the police beat box at the Plaza to register his complaint, he told him that the area comes under the MC and he could not do anything.
He said necessary directions should be issued to ensure that no vehicle was parked or driven at the Plaza.
RK Garg, a resident, said the sanctity of the Plaza had to be maintained as it was originally planned for pedestrians. On one hand the Administration was planning to run golf carts at the Plaza, while on the other it had failed to check the vehicles plying here illegally.
