Residents of Dadu Majra and its adjoining areas can hope to get relief from stink in two months. The city Municipal Corporation today awarded the work to an agency to put up high-pressure fogging system at the compost plant here.
The firm will supply, install, test and commission the system for odour control at 300 TPD (tonne per day) composting plant, Dadu Majra, where the city’s entire waste is processed. The MC had set an estimated cost of Rs 28,33,500 in the tender and the lowest bid was of Rs 28,15,082. It will take two months to install the facility, said an MC official.
According to the civic body, the system will release mist in the air. It will be a kind of foam in which different perfumes will be used. These are not bad for health and are hygienic. It will suppress the stench and release nice fragrance so that Dadu Majra and adjoining areas get rid of the odour in the air.
Officials said the system was being put in place to make life of people residing near the compost plant easy. The need-based system will have a timer, which may be fixed for 15 minutes or half an hour at a time. It can be used when wind is blowing because that is the time when people majorly have to bear with foul smell.
The compost plant was constructed this year near the Dadu Majra dumping ground to process garbage. It is a temporary mechanism till an integrated solid waste management plant designed by the National Environmental Engineering Research Institute is built here.
Dadu Majra residents have been complaining about foul smell for years. The MC has devised this mechanism to provide relief to them. However, residents say time will tell how effective this odour control mechanism turns out to be.
