A newly constructed government school building at Sector 12 has been ransacked by some miscreants. The school was among six new buildings constructed by the UT Engineering Department.

A lot of property has been damaged and utilities, including tiles, slabs, pipes, electric fitting, fans, switch boards and other material from the building, have been stolen. This has amounted to huge loss to the Engineering Department. More than Rs 14 crore were spent on the construction of the building.

Sources say there was no guard at the building for supervising the construction work. Laboratories and washrooms at the school have been demolished.

From the new academic session, children from Sectors 12, 14,11, Khuda Lahora, Khuda Jassu and Sarangpur were to be adjusted at the new school building.

The Education Department came to know about the incident when Education Secretary Arun Kumar Gupta asked the Engineering Department to complete the final work so that students could be shifted, sources said.

However, when the officials reached the school, it was found to be vandalised.

Alka Mehta, District Education Officer, said the building was not yet under the possession of the Education Department.

An official of the Engineering Department said that would lodge a complaint with the police.
