Chandigarh: Sec 29 resident gets 20-yr RI in rape case

Swati Sehgal, Special Judge, Fast Track Court, Chandigarh, has sentenced Sanjeev Kumar Yadav, a resident of Sector 29, here, to undergo rigorous imprisonment (RI) of 20 years for raping a girl. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 100,000 on the convict.

“The accused in order to satisfy his lust had ravished prosecutrix leaving behind a permanent scar on her body and soul. Rape is a barbaric act. It is an offence not only against the prosecutrix, but also against her family that suffers along with her. Such an act of the accused deserves to be dealt sternly and call for stringent punishment,” the court said while pronouncing the order.

The police had registered an FIR against the accused on December 16, 2021, on the complaint of the girl. The girl said her parents had gone to their native place and she, along with her brother, was alone in the house. She said her brother left home to appear for an examination at 9 am. Construction work was going on in at their house, where the accused was working as a labourer. Her brother had asked Sanjeev to come at 3 pm. However, the accused reached their house at noon.

The complainant asked him to leave and return after when her brother reaches home. On this, Sanjeev replied that her brother himself had called him. He was under the influence of liquor. Thereafter, he started doing work and she went to the kitchen to prepare a meal. Later, Sanjeev came to the kitchen and gagged her mouth. He took her in a room in front of the kitchen and raped her.

During the course of investigation, the accused was arrested. After the completion of investigation, a challan was submitted in the court. Finding a prima facie case, the court framed charges against the accused under Section 376 of the IPC to which he pleaded not guilty.
