Residents of Harbhajan Vihar in Sector 114 have complained that a large pond of sewage has formed near the Army Welfare Housing Organisation (AWHO) complex which has made their life miserable. Unhygienic living conditions, foul smell pervades in the vicinity all the time. It has become difficult to venture out here on rainy days. Besides mosquitoes and insects pose a threat of disease to thousands of residents living here.

“Armed forces personnel live in over 1,100 flats in this complex. The dirty water flows from Chappar Chiri across the Landran-Kharar road into Sector 114 near Swaraj Tractors and is blocked by debris further ahead near the railway line. Despite clear rules about dumping of raw sewage into nullahs/water channels, the entire area continues to dump it into this drain,” said Brigadier (retd) K Singh, a resident of the complex here.

Locals say in July 2023, Harbhajan Vihar experienced severe flooding with hundreds of vehicles in the basement getting damaged.

“We have approached developers Ansal API, administration officials, local MLA, and other drainage and mining department, but no one has acted to resolve the problem. The discharge of raw sewage into the drain continues with no outlet or a plan to dredge it and join it into the main drainage line,” said Baljit Singh, another resident here.

The residents say continued neglect of this problem may force them to contemplating blocking the flow of dirty water at the point where it enters Sector 114.

Drainage department officials said the matter was in their knowledge and they would be resolving the issue soon.
