A resident of Panchkula’s Sector 27 in Panchkula, Rajeev Verma (63), was duped of Rs 73,000 when he tried to file a complaint related to the sewerage with the Haryana Shehri Vikas Pradhikaran (HSVP).

He said he had called up a phone number available online to register a complaint with the HSVP. He then received a call from another phone number, and the caller directed him to transfer Re 1 as the registration fee. He was also asked to install an application, AnyDesk.

An unsuspecting Verma proceeded to pay Re 1 using his debit card. But he said, “When I submitted my debit card details, I lost access to my phone. I then received a message on my phone that Rs 49,000 had been debited from his account. It was soon followed by another message about Rs 24,000 being deducted from my account.”

He was later informed by the bank that Rs 73,000 had been fraudulently transferred from his account. The police have registered a case in this regard under Sections 120-B, 419 and 420 of the IPC.
