Dr BR Ambedkar State Institute of Medical Sciences (AIMS), Mohali, convened a high-level dissemination session today on The Lancet series on “Ultra-processed foods (UPFs) and human health”, published globally today.
The discussion brought together faculty, hostel wardens, clinicians, nutritionists, student representatives and public-health experts to analyse the growing health burden posed by the UPFs.
Dr Rachna Srivastava, sector expert – health, nutrition and well-being, Chandigarh Institute of Transformation, highlighted that the UPFs were increasingly becoming the “new tobacco for youth,” driven by aggressive marketing, easy availability, and low cost.
Dr Bhavneet Bharti, Director-Principal, AIMS Mohali, emphasised that the Lancet Series consolidates global evidence linking UPFs to obesity, metabolic risks, poor diet quality and multiple non-communicable diseases.
