The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the student wing of the Bharatiya Janata Party, got a shot in the arm today when ten Panjab University Student Union (PUSU) leaders changed loyalty and joined the party. Among the joining members were the 2023 PUSU president face, Devender Pal Singh, and 2022 PUSU secretary candidate Saksham Garg.

In an event held on the Panjab University campus here, the members were welcomed by ABVP’s north zone organising secretary Gaurav Attri.

During the event, Attri also mentioned that the BJP-backed student party would be contesting all four panel posts in the elections to be hold on September 5. “We are sure of our win. Only the parties which will be fielding candidates on all four seats are in fight with us. Others are out of the race,” he added. ABVP campus president Parvinder Negi and secretary Dhruvika Sehrawat also confirmed that the party would also field women candidate for the poll.

Speaking on the occasion, Devendar said he had decided to shift to the ABVP because the party was truly student oriented and took a stance on every issue. “The party gives a platform to all its members and everything is managed well here. I was in PUSU, but the work ABVP had been undertaking on the campus impressed me a lot,” he said.

Commenting on the shift of two of its former council candidates to the ABVP, a PUSU leader said they shifted only for the sake of their personal benefits.
