Showers cool tricity as monsoon on way out

Light to medium showers, accompanied by thunderstorms, lashed Chandigarh, Panchkula and Mohali on Tuesday, bringing a brief dip in temperature, but leaving humidity high at 86 per cent.

Rain that began in the afternoon continued till late evening. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said the spell marked the retreat of the monsoon, with mainly dry weather expected in the coming days.

The forecast, however, suggests partly cloudy skies with chances of thunderstorm and lightning in the tricity region till September 21. Day temperatures are likely to hover around 35°C and night temperatures around 24°C.

In the past 24 hours, Chandigarh recorded 2.2 mm of rainfall, Panchkula 12.5 mm and Mohali some traces. The maximum temperature settled at 33.2°C in Chandigarh, 33.3°C in Mohali and 32.3°C in Panchkula. Minimum temperatures were 24.4°C, 25.5°C and 24.7°C, respectively.

“As compared to yesterday, there was a fall of 0.4°C and 0.3°C in the average maximum temperature in Punjab and Haryana, respectively,” the IMD said.
