The sanitation workers of the Sirhind-Fatehgarh Sahib Municipal Council began a two-day strike, staging a sit-in outside the civic body office.

The workers are demanding an end to the contract system, seeking regular jobs. They also called for the release of pending salaries and allowances should, safety equipment and uniforms for safai sewaks, a pension scheme and other benefits. “We work day and night to keep the city clean, but our legitimate demands are being ignored,” they said.

The Safai Sewaks and the contract workers of other MC departments also joined the strike, bringing work to a standstill.

Addressing the gathering, employees’ union president Rajesh Kumar and other leaders said that despite presenting their demands with the government and MC officials on several occasions, they were still awaiting action. “We have decided to go on strike for two days. If our demands are not met, we will proceed on indefinite strike,” he added.

Senior Congress party leader Gurpreet Singh Lali and councilor Jagjit Kauki also joined the protest. “The sanitation workers are the backbone of the city and the government is doing an injustice,” the leaders said, assuring full support to the striking employees.
