Sitar, ‘dhrupad’ experts enthral

Sitar and “dhrupad” recitals marked Day 4 of the ongoing 50th All-India Bhaskar Rao Nritya and Sangeet Sammelan being organised by Pracheen Kala Kendra.

Sitar maestro Harvinder Sharma tugged at the heartstrings with his sitar performance and famous Mallick Bandhus sang “dhrupad” at the Tagore Theatre here today. The programme was also telecast on social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and official YouTube channel of Pracheen Kala Kendra.

Dr Sharma opened up the programme with the popular “raga pahadi”. He presented “masitkhani” and “rajakhani” followed by many traditional compositions. He was accompanied by tabla maestro Ustad Akram Khan. Dr Sharma concluded the recital with a captivating folk composition based on “khayal ang”.

After this melodic presentation, Mallick Brothers took the centre stage and the duo began with “raga jog” through an elaborate “alaap” besides “badat” followed by a “bandish” set to “dhamar taal” with lyrics “Khelan aaye hori kanhaai”. The duo concluded the recital with “sool taal”-based invocatory composition “kripalam mahakal”. They were ably accompanied by the noted pakhawaj player Rishishankar Upadhyay.
