Snatching incidents up in festive season, 13 reported in October

A surge in snatching incidents has been witnessed this festive season. Thirteen cases of snatching have been reported this month so far, while the police have solved six and arrested seven accused.

Despite enhanced police deployment in the city, snatchers continue to target people. The victims reported their mobile phones, gold chains and other valuables were snatched in broad daylight.

According to information, nine mobile phones, two gold chains and two purses were snatched from the victims.

As the festive season continues, the pressure on the police to curb such incidents has increased. They are trying to track down the perpetrators by scanning CCTV footage and taking eyewitness accounts.

People have raised concerns about the rising crime rate and questioned the efficiency of the police.

“The police are struggling to curb the rising snatchings. Snatchers take advantage of large crowds visiting markets for Diwali shopping,” said Neeraj, a local resident.

A police official said patrolling had been increased and police personnel deployed in vulnerable areas. “We are keeping a record of snatchers released from jail. They are being called to police stations quarterly to ensure they don’t take to the crime again,” said a police official.

As many as 95 cases of snatching had been registered at 16 police stations till September this year. Around 80 persons were arrested in 81 cases.
