Chandigarh, March 11

Punjab Sports Minister Rana Gurmit Singh Sodhi and Social Security, Women and Child Development Minister Aruna Chaudhary hailed boxer Simranjit Kaur for sealing a berth for the Tokyo Olympics.

Simranjit is the first woman pugilist from Punjab to be selected in the Indian team.

Sodhi said: “Simranjit has leaped forward the valiant spirit of Punjabis in Indian boxing by securing a ticket to the Tokyo Olympics.”

Simranjit (60kg) booked a place in the Tokyo Games after she defeated second seed Mongolian pugilist 5-0 in the quarterfinals of the Asia/Oceania Qualifier. She later upstaged third seed and Asian silver-medallist Shih-Yi Wu of Taiwan in the semis.

The 24-year-old from Chakar village in Ludhiana started her boxing career in 2008 and rose to prominence after she won the bronze medal at the World Boxing Championship in New Delhi in 2018. — TNS
